10th Anniversary : The Park : 30 + 31st Jan 2016

Ever sat in a café, on your own, reading a magazine or pondering over the menu? Only you’re not reading, are you? You’re listening-in. Eaves-dropping on private conversations. Don’t worry, it’s natural. We can’t help it. Whatever they’re talking about, it’s not our concern, is it? Are they angry? A bit too excited? Got the giggles – or sounding rather sad, we can do nothing about any of it. Except listen. We have no idea who they are, where they came from, why they’re upset, or why they seem so much happier than we are. They get up and leave – and we’ll never know if she did give him a piece of her mind, whether they got back together, or what happened next. No happy endings. No conclusions. With kids, it’s much the same, only they don’t hang about in cafés as much. But what if you were a tree? That’s right – a tree, in a park, in the picnic area – where all sorts of people come and go; a perfect place for you to listen in. Nobody knowing you’re there (being a tree that is.) So – who was the old man? Was that really a magic ring? Are there pirates in the park? Are girls better than boys? How did she lose the ring? What’s it like to fall in love? Why kill a squirrel? And why would you write your own story? These are their stories. And we’ll be listening-in. In The Park.

The Park is a full length drama, especially written for The Academy’s 10th Anniversary year.

The Sinden Theatre. 30 & 31 January 2016
